My baby turns 11 today. How did that happen?
When we brought him home from the hospital it only took about 1 day before his older brother, with all the wisdom of a 2 year old, insisted that we take him back. Good thing we didn’t take his advice.
Nolan has always been my serious child, wise beyond his years. He was probably 4 or 5 when we were talking about heaven. He said something that just brought me to tears:
Mommy, when you go to heaven I want to be sitting on your lap so I can go with you.
Imagine that coming from a tiny boy sitting in his car seat. Here come the tears again.
He has always loved sports, and he’s wanted to try them all. He’s played soccer, basketball, tried hockey and skateboarding, and has finally settled on karate and baseball as his favorites. He’s afraid of nothing, he doesn’t understand why he can’t go sky diving for his 11th birthday. And I wonder why I have so much gray hair.
He’s a little worker, always willing to help. Because he’s so serious, he seems older than 11. Actually he seems older than me at times. If I have a question about how something works or why it isn’t working, I will ask Nolan first. I sometimes have to remind myself to give him a chance to be silly. To tickle him or chase him around the house.
Nolan is an old soul, a brave confident boy. When I see him standing on the pitchers mound, no fear in his eyes, my eyes fill up with tears and my heart bursts with pride. Because that’s my boy.

Happy birthday, sweet one. Mom loves you always.
