Ah, the joys of eating out with our children. So much fun, I don’t know where to start.

Beware, what I’m about to tell you may completely kill your appetite. At the time this wasn’t funny at all, but now we can look back and laugh.

I may have mentioned before that I adore my inlaws. Adore. Them. So I really try to show them what well behaved, polite boys I am raising.

Everytime we go visit they take us out to dinner. Years ago when my kids were little, they always took us to the same family restaurant, because my husbands grandmother liked it.

There we were, my husband and I, our 2 boys, my in laws, my sister in law, and my husbands grandmother. Quite a large group. My in laws enjoyed sitting by my kids, so I was seated across the table from them. Which was fine with me, no playing tic tac toe 10 million times before the food came.

I was chatting with my sister in law, oblivious to what was happening across the table. All of a sudden I sensed a commotion. I glanced over and my youngest son, who was about 5 at the time, appeared to be choking. Everyone was staring at him, saying take a drink, take a drink.

I jumped up, because my baby was choking, scowling at my husband in the process. The poor child was gagging, so I patted him sharply on the back. He wasn’t turning blue, he just was in the coughing fit stage where he couldn’t swallow. I told him to spit it out. So he tried. And he did. He threw up mozzarella sticks all over his dinner plate, the plate full of food that the waitress had just thoughtfully put in front of him. Full mozzarella sticks, meaning he had just shoved them in his mouth without chewing. That’s my boy.

He wasn’t upset or embarrassed at all. In fact he asked right away if he could have some new food, since his was covered in…well, stuff. I quickly covered it with a napkin, but I’m pretty sure no one enjoyed their dinner that night. Except my son of course.

And no, my son isn’t allowed to order cheese sticks anymore. Never again.

Yikes. This is really, really scary. I’m glad you reacted so quickly and that he’s OK. What a good kid for just shrugging it off afterwards, too!

We can laugh about it now but it wasn’t funny at the time. Luckily it was over so quick that he didn’t have time to get scared.

Although I’m not sure he learned his lesson, the other day he was having one of those coughing fits, after eating a cheese stick! Now he agrees, no more cheese sticks.

How awful!! Choking is the scariest thing. My littlest chocked on a sticker a couple months ago! I had to call 911. I was terrified! I had to call 911 and everything. Ss happy he is ok. My husband always thinks I am overreacting too. Well, he could be right there…

I’ve been accused of overreacting, too, but it’s better than not reacting in those situations. You can never be too careful.
