I adore my in laws, and I have 2 wonderful sisters in law. The adults don’t normally exchange gifts at Christmas, just the kids. But last year one of my sisters in law gave us each a very nice manicure set, and I’d like to get them both something this year. I don’t know what to get though. My back up plan is some scented lotion, but that I’d like some more ideas to choose from. Nothing expensive, no more than $25, but something thoughtful.
I need your help with this. Please leave me a comment with a gift suggestion. Something you’ve given or received, or would like to receive. And in return, a giveaway!

Each year I like to give away my version of Oprah’s favorite things to the women who are important to me. This year I am giving them Bath and Body Works liquid foaming antibacterial soap, BBW antibacterial gel, tissues I picked up in Michael’s dollar section and for fun a pink flamingo wash cloth I found at Dollar Tree. So, my suggestion is to share some of your favorite things.

I suggest an amazon gift card b/c that way they can each choose what they want. I realize gift cards aren’t exactly the most fun to give, but they are my most favorite gift to receive.

I would suggest some good quality soy based candles. Almost every woman I know loves candles.

Or, you could get her a gift certificate to Scentsy. They have some great home fragrances and warmers.

I know that ‘giftcard’ sounds incredibly boring and impersonal—but with so many of us giving up any and all luxuries, due to the economy and playing catch-up with family bills—a really personalized “don’t think about the gas bill, for awhile” gift, is what I love to receive.
–Maybe a certificate to a local spa, for a manicure (would make me forget that I was covered in grass and greenery, all summer, while running the lawnmower).
–A restaurant gift certificate. About two years ago, a friend gave us a certificate to Outback, knowing that we would NEVER splurge on something like that.
–A bookstore or amazon certificate, to do some “resolution reading.”
It all depends on their taste and preferences, but with some thought, gift certificates don’t have to be a “thoughtless” gift!

I’d love to receive some all natural, no bad ingredients body butter. That would make a great gift.

How about a small hat box with a nice scarf or gloves or a couple of pairs of the fuzy socks. I usually find pretty hat boxes at JoAnns or Michaels craft and there is alway a 40% off coupon in their advertisement flyer.

I know I love receiving and giving homemade gifts. I have made cookies in a jar, soup in a jar and hot chocolate in a jar. Very easy to make and then they can use it at their leisure.

How about inviting them to a girl’s night out as a gift? Pick someplace where the cost would be similar to how much you are planning on spending and then include that it’s your treat with the invitation. You could print something really cute up on the computer and put it in a box with a pretty ribbon even. This is a gift of thought and your time and you benefit also by getting to spend time with them also (with no kids, husbands, etc.)

We’ve already received a few gifts this year, and two of my absolute favorites are–
1. Bath and Body Works Anti-Bacterial Gentle Foaming Soap in Sea Island Cotton scent ($5, last time I checked their website). I never have time to luxuriate in a bubble bath, so this soap gives me a ‘teeny’ touch of scented bliss, every time I do a quick hand-washing.
2. Avon Moisture Therapy Intensive Hand Cream ($3.99 for 4 oz.; also comes in holiday-pattern mini tubes). My hands are finally starting to feel less like sandpaper. This is a thick, rich cream, much like Neutrogena Norweigan Formula, and it’s very lightly scented. I like to apply it at night, with cotton gloves, as my hands are usually a total yard-beaten mess!!
Thanks so much for doing the giveaway.

Amazon gc, Starbucks gc, or give her a book that you think she would like and write a nice note on the inside of the book.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:54 am
How fun, I think a little pampering basket from Body Shop would be nice (bath gel, bubble bath, loufa, etc).
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:55 am
Another idea is a really nice christmas ornament for both of them, like perhaps a small silver picture frame ornament?
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:56 am
Or how about a set of 4 champagne glasses from pier one?
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:56 am
I also like the idea of a couple current best-seller books that you think they would like.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:57 am
I’m a fan of a nice wine/cheese basket (or chocolate if they prefer!). Should be something they will enjoy and possibly appreciate breaking into during the hussle and craziness of the holiday.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 9:58 am
I did this for my sisters a few years ago… I framed an old christmas card picture (different pics from different years for each of them) of our family from back in the day. I had them matted and framed at a you-frame-it store, so it wasn’t expensive but looked great! They LOVED it. To do this, maybe you could coordinate with a family aunt that has saved your husbands family xmas photos/cards. Or with your husbands mom.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:00 am
How about cute or funny t-shirts that are matching but different? Maybe they have different sayings on them, or are a different color. Sisters tend to like the same stuff, but also, it’s kind of a fun reminder that your sister has a similar tee.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:01 am
If they are coffee girls, why not get them each a starbucks mug, 1/2 pound of coffee, and a $5 gift certificate to use during a coffee date with you?
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:02 am
If they like to garden, how about helping them think ahead to spring… buy them some new gardening gloves, a couple packets of seeds, and put it all in a nice pot.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:03 am
If their ears are pierced, a nice set of gold hoops is classic.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:05 am
A nice set of gloves – fleece or fur lined, is always good too! Assuming you/they dont live in CA or Fla.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:06 am
If they are outdoorsy types, you could get them each a sigg water bottle. This also works if they are environmentally conscious.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:07 am
Being environmental, you could also give them each a set of cloth napkins. Fabkins are great if they have kids, or macys/crate and barrel for some simple, classic styles. If they’re not too expensive, you could also add napkin rings to the gift.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:09 am
Do they like crafts? A small tupperware box for some extra organization, can be filled with some yards of fabric, ribbon and pretty buttons.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:10 am
How about nice wallets? Or a clutch. You can find some great ones on etsy.
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:11 am
I like theme gifts, so how about giving them a really good DVD that recently came out, a box of popcorn, and maybe a chocolate bar?
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:14 am
You could go with a gift that’s fun, but also a little sentimental… have t-shirts printed with ‘the best’ written in gold on them, and tell them they’re the best sisters-in-law! Then add a few other gold colored or gold made items (gold star pin, champagne glasses with gold stems, etc).
Laura on December 19th, 2008 10:15 am
I have a lot of ideas, as you can see… but here’s my last one! Tickets to a show, that the three of you can go to together (concert, play, etc). Hope you find the perfect gifts for your SILs!
Dree on December 19th, 2008 11:34 am
I think Oil of Olay Regenerist is nice.
Elsie on December 19th, 2008 12:55 pm
I’d get them MUSIC, either gift cards for music,or CD’s that you think they’d like, I suggest instrumentals, holiday or nature, or something very cool…Yo-Yo Ma’s new Peace CD is very pretty, especially “You Couldn’t Be Cuter” song open to interpretation,
..which every lady can relate to..
Happy Holidays, you are a sweetie!
Marcia on December 19th, 2008 1:37 pm
A cute or unique christmas ornament that they could remember you by each year they hang it on their tree. I also like the Starbucks idea if they are coffee drinkers.
Merry Christmas!
Laura on December 19th, 2008 3:28 pm
I thought of another gift idea for you… buy them a charm bracelet this year, and each additional year, give them a new charm for it. This is assuming a charm bracelet is something they would like. Would become a fun tradition for you with your SILs, and make future shopping for them, fairly easy.
cheryl on December 20th, 2008 9:30 am
I think a gift certificate at a goodwill store. Bargains galore
Tamara B. on December 20th, 2008 5:33 pm
I like to find unique hat boxes and I will put a nice pair a pajamas in this wrapped in tissue paper. you can find pajama sets for $15 or less at JC Penney or Sears at this time of year.

How about a sterling silver bracelet? I was able to find sterling silver on sale at Kohl’s for 60% off and then I got an additional 20% off for using my Kohl’s card. It was a great deal! You could find one for less than $25.
Thanks for the giveaway.

I am always looking for something small to give to people that mean alot to you, but that you wouldn’t buy a normal “gift” for. This year I found ornaments that were personalized for each person in their family and they have the year on it. Not a huge gift, but thoughtful in its own way.

Although it is too late for Christmas this year (I’m sorry!) I think the best, yet not expensive gift out there right now is the personalized jewelry. I’ve seen many pieces that are right around $25 and some below even.
Lisa Renea on December 21st, 2008 3:53 pm
I don’t know if this a good idea or not, but I know that I would like it. I think a flashlight or something for the car, like jumper cables or a first aid kit. Sometimes people forget about those kinds of items, but when there is a need for them, they always appreciate having them.
Cheryl on December 21st, 2008 7:09 pm
I think picture frames always make a nice gift-especially for anyone with children. Prices can vary widely and you can find them almost anywhere.

I’m with you…I have two very amazing Sisters in Love and I am so thankful to have them in my life.
One year we each got each other something for the house that when we looked at it then it would remind us of each other. I think I went to Kirkland’s (love that place) and got one of those “Friendship Ring” ceramic candle things and told them it looked like us with all our kids around a circle. Not much, but funny and they both loved it.
We also went one time and got pictures taken together at Wal-Mart and put them in nice frames for our houses. It was a fun day!
Hope that helps! Thanks for the follow on Twitter…I look forward to getting to know you more!
